CHICAGO — Chavez Clarke, 18, had spent this past Saturday taking catch-up classes so he could graduate on time. As he left a South Side high school that afternoon, he was fatally shot, in broad daylight and in plain view of other students. His death marked a grim end to a week when police and school officials had stepped up their efforts to combat a spike in killings of public school students.
The day before, an eighth-grader at a North Side school was shot and killed.
In all, 20 Chicago public school students have been fatally shot so far this school year — seven in March alone — compared with 24 the year before, said spokesman Mike Vaughn. Including those who died in non-gun violence, 22 students have been killed this year, and 30 last school year. School officials could not provide precise figures, but said that killings had increased markedly over past years.
On Tuesday, hundreds of Chicago public school students from four high schools gathered downtown to protest the violence and to call for more gun-control measures, with the school district sanctioning their absences and supplying buses, the Associated Press reported. Twenty empty school desks, each representing a fallen student, were set up in front of the James R. Thompson Center, which houses state offices.
A well-known anti-violence crusader on the South Side, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, had also planned a community rally Tuesday, and said St. Sabina Catholic Church will offer rewards for information about the killings.
In response to the increased violence, Chicago police have been increasing their presence at schools and have begun monitoring live pictures from 4,500 school security cameras.
When students returned from spring break on the day after Easter to Richard T. Crane Technical Preparatory Common School on the West Side, they were met by a heavy police presence and parent escorts. Since the March 7 gang-related killing of Ruben Ivy, 18, a block from the school, many students had stayed home, fearing retaliatory violence. Ivy was allegedly shot by a 15-year-old resident of a nearby public housing development, where about 120 Crane students live.
“It seems a lot safer now,” Devinity Reynolds, 16, said Friday morning, as at least eight patrol cars and a paddy wagon lingered around the school. “I hope they do this for the rest of the school year.” Officers stood on the sidewalk as parents in fluorescent yellow city-issued vests, emblazoned with the words “walking school bus,” met students at bus stops near the school and escorted them inside.
In February, Mayor Richard M. Daley proposed stepped-up state and federal anti-gun legislation and promoted the city’s program to pay people to turn in illegal firearms, which collected more than 6,000 weapons last year. The mayor also moved up the city’s curfew for those younger than 18 by half an hour (to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 p.m. on other days), and city officials held a summit on teen violence March 22.
But police spokeswoman Monique Bond and school officials say recent media attention and public outrage over the killings are calling attention to a chronic problem that is not necessarily worse than usual.
“While one shooting is always too many, the aggravated batteries and gang shootings involving juveniles are actually down this year, compared to years past,” Bond said. “There are just too many guns out there.”
Despite the killings of Ivy and Clarke, school spokesman Vaughn said few shootings have taken place near school grounds during school hours.
“It’s very rare weapons are found in schools, and we’ve had declining numbers of fights,” he said. “Students will say the one place they feel safe is school.”
But Gary Slutkin, executive director of the anti-violence group CeaseFire, challenged that assertion.
“Violence in the schools is ongoing,” Slutkin said. “It’s not just the deaths. It’s the kids beaten until they have seizures. It’s the fights on buses with bats and knives. These kids have grown up around violence. By age 20, 40 to 70 percent of kids have personally witnessed a shooting.”
CeaseFire places mediators known as “interrupters” directly in schools and violence-plagued neighborhoods to try to defuse gang and personal conflicts before they become violent. The program lost $6.25 million in state funding last year and cut its staff as a result.
“We’re fire-fighting, pulling our staff from place to place, instead of pushing things down in schools and keeping them down,” Slutkin said. “Instead of having a handle on Crane, we had to come to Crane after the fact.”
NewYork Crime also Rising
April 3, 2008 –
Murders, rapes and robberies have jumped citywide so far this year, statistics released yesterday show.
But the news isn’t all bad - despite the sharp upturn in these categories, overall crime continues to fall, although by a scant 1.2 percent, thanks to dips in assaults, burglaries and car thefts.
SEE Crime Stats For Your Precinct (PDF)
The NYPD figures show murders are up 24.7 percent, from 89 during the same period last year to 111.
Rapes jumped 13.8 percent, from 324 to 369. Robberies rose 4.5 percent, from 4,595 to 4,803.
The jumps in murder and robbery are particularly alarming to top brass and criminologists because these categories are viewed as “bellwether” crime indicators - and the Big Apple in recent years had been bucking upward national crime trends.
The new figures show shootings are up 17.5 percent, from 217 to 255. The number of victims reached 286 from 260, a 10 percent rise, even as Mayor Bloomberg continued to wage a national campaign on gun control.
“In the short run, the NYPD will bring the number down, as they have in the past, by shifting officers to the problem areas,” predicted Thomas Reppetto, author of “NYPD: A City and Its Police.”
“But there is a limit,” he cautioned, referring to issues surrounding the paltry police starting salary that contributed to the shrinking NYPD ranks, from a high of 41,000 in 2001 to 36,000 this year.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne noted the department is fighting its own successes spanning 16 years, with murder and overall crime at 45-year lows.
“In many, if not most, instances, where there are increases, they still represent significant decreases even from just two years ago,” Browne said.
Serious crimes are up in 32 of the city’s 76 police precincts and Commissioner Ray Kelly has doubled the number of rookies in high-crime “impact zones.”
Staten Island showed the largest increase in overall crime, with a 25.6 percent jump.
The borough’s three precincts registered increases from 15 percent in the 120th, in the St. George section, to 40 percent in the 123rd, in Tottenville.
The NYPD has already dispatched dozens of additional cops to the island to tamp down the surge.
The Bronx had an overall uptick of 2.9 percent, with the Hunts Point section accounting for the rise with a 33 percent jump. Southern Queens showed an increase of 1.46 percent, spurred by 15 percent jumps in precincts in Jamaica and the Rockaways.
By comparison, northern Queens led the precincts showing a decline in crime, with a drop of 8.6 percent.
The remaining police borough commands each showed declines ranging from 3.9 percent in Brooklyn South to Manhattan South’s scant 0.65 percent drop.
Jenkem, known by Fox News as “butt hash“, is an old meme turned fresh thanks to a sheriff’s bulletin plagiarizing this very article.
Jenkem, invented by Pickwick of Totse, is a drug popular with nigras and american middle schoolers. The increasing popularity of the drug is shocking in America, where far more desirable substances are available at far lower a cost (at least mentally). This increase has been partly attributed to the success of Chocolate Rain, whose lyrics explicitly refer to the practice and social effects of jenkem abuse.
We’re not sure what they’re inhaling down in Collier County, Florida, but here’s the bizarre “information bulletin” prepared by the local sheriff’s intelligence bureau about a purported “new drug” favored by the kids. It’s an inhalant called “Jenkem,” and causes hallucinations and a “euphoric high.” Of course, as the bulletin notes, Jenkem users dislike its sewagey taste, which can last for days. That’s because Jenkem’s active ingredients are urine and fecal matter, hence its street names like “Butthash” and “Fruit from Crack Pipe”. We’ve tried to speak with the bulletin’s author, Lieutenant Al Ganich, but he has not returned TSG calls. Perhaps he’s realized that his “CONFIDENTIAL” September 26 report–which is authentic, according to a sheriff’s official–may be itself full of shit. Ganich’s alert reminds us of a New York Fire Department memo from a chief who also apparently never heard of

Information Bulletin
New Drug - JENKEM
On 09/19/07 Cpl. Disarro received and email from a concerned parent regarding a new drug called
“Jenkem”. The parent advised their child learned about this drug through various conversations with
several students at Palmetto Ridge High.
Jenkem originated in Africa and other third world countries by fermenting raw sewage to create a gas
which is inhaled to achieve a high. Jenkem is now a popular drug in American Schools.
Jenkem is a homemade substance which consists of fecal matter and urine. The fecal matter
and urine are placed in a bottle or jar and covered most commonly with a balloon. The
container is then placed in a sunny area for several hours or days until fermented. The contents
of the container will separate and release a gas, which is captured in the balloon. Inhaling the
gas is said to have a euphoric high similar to ingesting cocaine but with strong hallucinations of
times past.
Once ingested the onset of the high takes approximately 10 seconds with the most severe hallucinations
happening in approximately 20 minutes. Several articles indicate that the subject immediately passes out
after ingesting the gas then regains a magical/hallucinogenic state within seconds of regaining
consciousness. The high has been described by subjects as a feeling of “being out of it” and talking to
dead people. The feeling of being “out of it” may last for several hours or days.
All subjects who used the Jenkem disliked the taste of sewage in their mouth and
the fact that the taste continued for several days.
Slang terms: Winnie, Shit, Runners, Fruit from Crack Pipe, Leroy Jenkems,
Might, Butthash, and Waste.
Can this be true. is this racist peice of trash coming from a real place cause us americans are not really aware of how the rest of the world sees us as a people… especially as a race but my opion is that the little jerk has a point. and do feel with a sense of optimism that Barack Obama will renew the publics matter of fact the worlds opinion of us
As of March 27, 2008 Authorities have said that Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, gave a false urine sample to probation officials on Feb. 29 and also tested positive five times earlier this month for controlled substances, including Xanax and Percocet.
The former is used to treat anxiety and the latter is typically used to treat moderate to severe pain, but is considered very addictive.
U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick sentenced Sigel, 34, to three months in prison and one additional year of supervised release, which he is to continue in a drug-treatment program.
Beanie was already serving a six-month term in a halfway house for having previously violated supervised release. Apparently “financial pressure” is the reason Beanie is giving for his failed drug tests. He’s been reported as expressing that the only gets 14 cents per record. And unfortunately his legal situation doesn’t allow him to tour and collect show money.
(AP) Frenchie Davis, the big-voiced “American Idol” contestant who found success on Broadway in “Rent,” will undergo surgery to remove a vocal cord polyp.
Davis said she’s eager to take care of the condition that’s begun to cause tiredness and hoarseness after performances. But she’s apprehensive.
“I’ve talked to other singers who had surgery. One girl said her voice went up. Others’ voices got clearer. I’m just excited to see and a little nervous, of course. It’s still surgery,” Davis told The Associated Press.
Her main concern is the risk of losing her range, she said, but the surgeon has assured her that won’t happen. Doctors had been monitoring the polyp on her left vocal cord; when it grew, they advised surgery to avoid long-term damage.
The condition likely is from overuse and singing improperly, Davis said.
“I was doing eight shows a week of `Rent’ for four years. When I had a break from `Rent,’ I was using it to sing elsewhere,” she said. “Now I need a vocal coach to make sure I’m singing properly so it doesn’t come back.”
The surgery is scheduled for the end of April; recovery will take about a month. That will allow Davis to go ahead with a national tour of “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” co-starring “Idol” winner Ruben Studdard. It’s set to begin this fall in New York.
In 2003, Davis was dropped from “Idol” because of a previous appearance on an adult Web site. In contrast, the Fox talent show took no action this season when contestant David Hernandez’s stint as a nightclub stripper was revealed or when racy photos of Antonella Barba surfaced last season on the Internet.
“I guess I had to be thrown to the wolves to afford these other contestants the luxury of being judged on their talent,” said Davis, 28. “I guess that’s what needed to happen.”
It was “interesting,” she added, that she was punished for something she did at age 19.
Stated by (AP) An Oregon man who used to be a woman says he is pregnant with a baby girl.Thomas Beatie’s first-person story appears in a recent issue of The Advocate, a Los Angeles-based newsmagazine for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people.
According to the story, Thomas was born a woman but decided to become a transgender male and legally changed his sex to male. He had his breasts surgically removed and started bimonthly testosterone injections, but kept his vagina.
Now identifying as male, Thomas legally married Nancy, the story says. The pair wanted a biological baby but Nancy was unable to carry a child. So they decided Thomas would.
“How does it feel to be a pregnant man?” Thomas writes in the article. “Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am. In a technical sense I see myself as my own surrogate, though my gender identity as male is constant. To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child . . . I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.”
Before getting pregnant he stopped injecting testosterone, and his body “regulated itself after about four months,” he writes in The Advocate.
One year and nine doctors later, Thomas got pregnant, but the pregnancy was ectopic, and rarer still, with triplets. After surgery, Thomas lost all his embryos and his right fallopian tube.
But the second pregnancy has been a success, writes Thomas: “We are happily awaiting her birth, with an estimated due date of July 3, 2008.
